At last year's San Diego comic-con, convention-goers heeding the call of nature were greeted by large prohibitive signs outside the restrooms. Facilities, they stated, were strictly off-limits to non-human life forms. Rather than a cruel joke at the expense of the average Con patron, the signage was the beginning of a teaser campaign for District 9, a Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi outing written and directed by erstwhile Halo helmer, Neill Blomkamp.
The Background:
The origins of District 9 can be traced to Blomkamp's 2005 short film Alive In Joburg (look it up on YouTube), a low-budget mockumentary about the life of non-humans since the first ship appeared. Given the tone of its publicity campaign, it seems likely that D9 will take a similar documentary style as it follows the plight of the oppressed E.T.s.
The Aliens:
The tendril-faced aliens themselves are given no title beyond the PC sobriquet "non-humans", and live in squalid conditions. Employed to perform menial tasks, they are required to have their occupation stamped on their head and are abused by sadistic MNU soldiers. An underground militant group called Pro Forma are attempting to redress this situation - by any means necessary.
